This month I was excited to interview my dear friend and Doula, Meg Smith. I first met Meg at Abhyaasa Yoga in Downtown Naperville. Her naturally nurturing nature immediately drew me in and I couldn't help but just feel at home in her presence. It was no surprise to me when I found out that she was a Doula. Today, Meg and I partner to co-lead Prenatal Partner Yoga for couples in preparation for labor and delivery. Meg will also play an important role in our future Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training coming in 2018.
Meg is a DONA International certified Birth Doula who has attended over 190 Births and helps Mamma's get the most out of their birth experience. Meg is also a ProDoula Certified PostPartum and Infant Care Doula and a certified Childbirth Educator through ACBE and a VBAC trained birthworker. Read on to enjoy our fascinating interview, explaining how she holds space and helps couples through the childbirth preparation, labor, and postnatal process.
Tell us about yourself.
I am a DONA International certified birth Doula with passion for assisting woman to find the strength to have a positive birth experience. Whatever you envision your birth experience to be, I will work with you and your partner to make that a reality. I will be your strength and comfort in the delivery room as you enjoy this life changing experience. I am also certified to teach Prenatal Childbirth Education Classes.
I also have learned over the years the importance of supporting a new mom in the postpartum period. I am a ProDoula Postpartum and Infant Care Postpartum Doula.
What does a Birth Doula do?
Whether beginning or expanding your family, each birth brings together a unique set of hopes, anxieties and dreams that a Doula works with you to ensure come true. I will provide a loving and supportive source of care that will assist you and your partner as you welcome your child to the world!
What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?
As a Postpartum and Infant Care Doula, I nurture the mother! I support a new family's transition to life at home. I strive to ease the burdens of daily life so that you can enjoy and bond with your baby! I will provide loving and supportive care at this exciting (and sometimes exhausting!) time for you and your family.
Having unconditional support, like that provided by a Postpartum and Infant Care Doula can:
~Help reduce Postpartum Mood Disorders
~Improve Breastfeeding success
~Improve Bonding
~Help older siblings transition and accept the new baby
What is the biggest misconception about Doulas?
I think the biggest misconception about Doulas is that we only attend home births. All of the births that I attend are in local hospitals. I have great relationships with OB, Midwives and Labor and Delivery nurses. I have even been invited into a unit to explain the benefits of a Doula. Many times, I leave a Birth hugging the care providers!
